Polygon is an ecosystem of networks and tools designed to make Ethereum-based activity faster or cheaper. POL is the ecosystem's token; older material may refer to MATIC.
Built by: Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun
Polygon started as Matic Network and expanded into a family of Ethereum scaling technologies. Its ecosystem token is transitioning in many contexts from MATIC to POL.
What makes it different
Its own rules, its own trade-offs.
“Polygon” is not one security model: Polygon PoS, bridges, and zero-knowledge products have different designs and risks.
Not the same as: a guarantee, a bank account, or a customer-service payment rail.
How a transaction becomes real
From wallet to chain.
A user signs a transaction on the chosen Polygon network.
Validators order and execute it under that network's rules.
Bridges, when used, lock or represent assets across networks and add another trust/technical layer.
Supply and incentives
Why the token exists.
Token supply and migration details depend on the MATIC/POL upgrade path and the product being used.
Use it safely
What can go wrong.
Know whether you are on Ethereum, Polygon PoS, or another Polygon product. Bridges and token migrations are high-risk moments for phishing.
Verify it yourself
Look at the chain.
A block explorer lets you inspect public transactions, blocks, addresses, and fees. Never paste a recovery phrase or private key into one.
